United rout Wigan as Owen gets off the mark

As the half time whistle went fans could be forgiven for feeling slightly anxious about the number of missed chances. However they need not have worried as just 5 minutes into the second half Wayne Rooney opened the scoring, heading in Valencia's cross. Berbatov soon added an un-orthodox second, a deflected second goal for Rooney made it three before Owen and Nani added one each.

England striker Wayne Rooney joined the 100 club and Michael Owen got off the mark as Manchester United re-discovered that winning habit in emphatic style.

Rooney made the breakthrough in the 56th minute and got his second nine minutes later in a fine second half show.

In between Dimitar Berbatov found the target in the 58th minute as United bounced back from their humbling by newly-promoted Burnley in midweek.

Owen made his mark in the 85th minute after replacing Rooney 13 minutes earlier and Nani completed the scoring in stoppage time with a superb free-kick.

The day, however, belonged to Rooney, such an unselfish worker, as he scored his 100th and 101st goals for the club.

Yet United found it hard going in the first half even though they had plenty of possession.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson looked concerned at the break after making seven changes to his side in a bid for victory at the DW Stadium.

He was looking for an immediate response after what happened at Turf Moor and his side almost took the lead in the fourth minute with a swift break.

Nani cut the ball back into the area and Darren Fletcher was the first to react but saw his effort cleared off the line by Titus Bramble.

Three minutes later Paul Scholes hoisted a shot high over the bar following a clever flick from Berbatov after Fletcher had carved out the opening.

Wigan were again on the back foot after 16 minutes when Rooney strode forward but his effort was deflected wide.

Rooney then made time and space in the area only for goalkeeper Chris Kirkland to smother his close-range shot.

United were looking menacing every time they poured forward and Berbatov headed into Kirkland's arms following a cross from Nani four minutes later.

Wigan, however, almost took the lead with their first real attack in the 26th minute.

Jason Koumas showed good skill to work his way to the edge of the penalty area. He tried to curl the ball beyond Ben Foster only for the goalkeeper to react superbly and divert it to safety.

United responded in the 32nd minute and Rooney got away from Bramble only to rattle a shot against Kirkland's legs.

Then Fletcher's effort was cleared in the 39th minute after he had been set-up by Scholes.

Wigan, however, came close to opening the scoring in the 49th minute when Charles N'Zogbia won a free-kick off Patrice Evra early in the second half.

N'Zogbia dusted himself down and and picked out Paul Scharner in the area. He peeled away from his marker only to head narrowly wide of the post.

Antonio Valencia, such a cult figure during his time at Wigan, had to endure catcalls and jeers after going to ground in the 54th minute.

The Ecuador winger, however, was smiling two minutes later when he supplied the cross that led to the opening goal.

It came from Rooney - a fine header into the corner - and a landmark one as well. He savoured the moment and the goal was his reward for another typically hard shift.

That was the cue for United to turn the screw and Berbatov added a second two minutes later.

He started and finished the move cheekily chipping the ball over Kirkland before finding the net with his second touch after Scholes supplied the through ball.

United made it 3-0 in the 65th minute thanks to Rooney's second goal of the game. There was touch of luck about this effort as his shot took a slight deflection off Mario Melchiot to wrong-foot Kirkland after Berbatov had supplied the opening.

Rooney was given a rousing reception by the visiting fans when he was replaced by Michael Owen in the 72nd minute.

It was damage limitation now for Wigan, who had lost at home to Wolves in midweek.

However Owen made it 4-0 to United with his first goal for the club, a cool finish into the corner in the 85th minute after he had been set up by Nani.

Nani had the final word with a superb free-kick in stoppage time from 25 yards that sailed over a stranded Kirkland's head.

Vidic set to return for Reds

Nemanja Vidic will return for United on Saturday against Wigan, but that good news was offset by confirmation that Rio Ferdinand will be missing for up to a month.

Sir Alex confirmed the return of one of his favoured central defenders on Friday, but conceded that a minor muscle tear in Rio's thigh will keep him out for "hopefully three, but maybe four" weeks.

"We don't have any new injuries from Wednesday night. They're all fit," he said.

"The one position we're hoping for an improvement in is with Vidic. He's trained now for ten days and he is ready for a game. Hopefully he'll be OK for Saturday.

"Gary Neville played 15 minutes at Burnley and he could be ready too, and that gives us experience at an important time after defeat on Wednesday."

In Neville and Vidic, Sir Alex will welcome back plenty of experience into a defensive unit that has been shorn of familiarity this season.

"Experience is important," the Reds boss added. "And the kind of experience that Gary brings is great for us, while Vidic's performance levels since he's been with us have been outstanding. So you'd always want Nemanja in your team. We'll get that back on Saturday and that'll help us."

It may only have been the Reds' second game of the season - and early dropped points are not unusual at United - but defeat to Burnley clearly hurt as Sir Alex Ferguson was in defiant and focused mood on Friday.

The United boss takes his men to Wigan on Saturday and is demanding an immediate riposte to erase the memory of Wednesday's shock 1-0 loss at Turf Moor.

"[Bad starts to seasons] are possibly part of our history," he said. "But we don't like losing, and we don't like losing in a situation where we feel we should have won.

"Maybe it was always going to be Burnley's night, having been out of the top league for 33 years. Their fans were fantastic. It was the biggest night of their lives, and their players ran their socks off. It was an incredible effort by them physically.

"They scored a fantastic goal, too. We maybe should have dealt with it better, but nonetheless it was an incredible strike.

"If that was one of our players, we'd be saying he's world class and he'd get all the headlines. Robbie Blake has been around a long time and I've seen him do that many times before. Nobody is saying Robbie Blake is a world class player, but it was a world class finish. You won't see many better this season."

United's own goalscoring opportunities in the match went begging, a clear source of concern for the boss. But he remains confident that his players will step up to the plate in front of goal, firmly insisting that he won't add to his squad in the transfer market this month.

"We've dominated two games of football, but of course we'd like to score more goals. Our ratio of goals dropped last season - our poorest for 15 years in terms of goal difference. That was an issue last year and will be again unless we step up to the mark, which I'm confident we will do. We'll win games because this is a good squad of players."

Nevertheless, that trust in his players does not dilute the urgency with which he wants the team to click into top form. He added: "You can't lose too many games in this league and we've already lost one.

"It's another day in the history of Manchester United. It's not part of us that we like, but nonetheless it's part of us. It's happened before and it'll happen again. At this club, whenever we have a defeat it's what you go and do about it.

"On Saturday, as is always the case in football, we have an opportunity. Four days after a bad defeat we can do something about it. Hopefully we do that."

Review : Western Digital WD HD Media Player

For months now, I have been trying to play .MKV and other video files on my living room front projector. At first I tried to connect a laptop directly to the TV. But this didn’t always work, the audio was crappy, and it was awkward to have a laptop connected to the projector.

I started using my XBOX 360 to play video files. At first I wanted to stream the files across my network. This worked every once in a while, but mostly it was an exercise in frustration. And I got miserable fast forward and rewind capability because of the network bottleneck.

Then I tried using my Neuros OSD for this. That was a non-starter as the OSD only has a composite video out port and I wanted to play high definition video.

Eventually I started copying video files to big fat thumb drives and plugging them directly into the XBOX. This worked very well for a lot of video files, but didn’t work at all for high definition files because they were mostly over 4GB in size (the XBOX 360 only recognizes FAT32 formatted drives, and FAT32 doesn’t allow for more than 4GB per file).

I then started investigating the black arts of video transcoding. I looked for tools that would allow me to convert the video formats I found on the internet into something that was XBOX 360 friendly. But most of the automated tools were a compromise. If it converted the video into something XBOX friendly, and under 4GB in size, the audio would be downgraded to 2 channels (from 5.1). And I would run my computer for hours converting video, and many times something would go wrong and the file wouldn’t play on the XBOX.

I was banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out.

One Fall afternoon, Western Digital announced the WD HD TV Media Player. It promised to play high definition video over HDMI and optical audio, up to 1080p, all for about $120 street price. I was skeptical at first that such a tiny and inexpensive device would solve all of my months of video headaches. But any skepticism disappeared once I hooked the gizmo up to my projector and in about 20 seconds I was watching glorious high definition 1080p with DTS sound.

Basically the WD HD TV Media Player (horrible name, by the way) will play just about any video format you throw at it. You put the videos on any USB mass storage device, like a thumb drive or an external hard drive, and plug it into the device. It recognizes the files on the drive and plays any video, audio, or photo files it finds. It comes with a handy remote control, and the software interface is very simple and easy-to-use. The box has 2 USB ports for you to plug in any combination of mass storage devices. Even better, it supports the NTFS file format so you are not limited to files that are under 4GB.

I loaded up an external hard drive with all manner of video files and plugged it into the Media Player. Using the remote control I navigated the on-screen menu and chose several different file formats to test. The little black box played each of the files beautiful. The playback was smooth, even in fast action sequences. The digital audio worked flawlessly and it even supports subtitles. I tested a variety of 720p and 1080p and 480p files. I couldn’t find a single one the device had trouble with.

I connected the Media Player via optical audio and HDMI. It also supports composite video with analog audio, but I did not test those ports.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the compact yet powerful remote control. I hid the tiny Media Player box behind my media cabinet in the back of the room where my projector is. And I didn’t think the remote control would be able to hit the device, but sure enough I just pointed it at the ceiling above my head and it worked very nicely, registering each key press.

I love this little black box. It singlehandedly solved my video playback problems and ended months of frustration. People will gripe about the lack of network support, but I personally have no desire to stream high definition video over my local network. Direct hard drive or thumb drive connections ensure fast and reliable playback and controls. Simple and fast, the WD HD TV Media Player is a powerhouse solution in a tiny and affordable package.

If Your Site Is Rejected by Google...

If you receive that email from Google stating that your site has not been accepted, the first thing you should remember is that as an AdSense member, you become a partner and are representing Google, Inc.

They have to make sure the websites that display these ads are up to par or they could run the risk of losing advertisers. Imagine if you were paying Google to display your ad and you found it showing up on a poorly developed, junky website.

Of course, if your site is rejected, it doesn't mean it is poorly developed. There may be other reasons:

1) Is your site an "About Me" page?

Google does not usually accept these kinds of personal sites because most of them do not have a specific topic or theme. They are usually just random facts about the website owner or their hobbies, pictures, etc.

It would be difficult for Google's technology to display targeted ads on these kinds of pages because the topics vary from subject to subject.

They are looking for "themed" sites that contain a generous amount of information on a specific topic. It could be anything from sewing tips to sports. Just make sure there is an obvious theme with adequate information.

2) Is your site organized?

Be sure your site has a neat and clean navigation that's easy to follow. Also ensure all the links work and that there are no typos. Keep the colors to a minimum and make sure each page has a consistent layout.

3) How many pages are on your site?

Even though Google doesn't specify a page number requirement, many believe they are looking for web sites with a certain amount of content. Again, it's not likely a two-page site will get accepted. Try to strive for at least 15 pages.

4) Is your content solid?

Don't just submit a website with a bunch of links to other sites. Be sure you have a themed/niche site with enough original content of your own.

5) Is your site an exact carbon copy of someone else's?

Some believe Google can find out if your site is original or not. Don't risk it and steal from someone else. It will come back to haunt you.

If you're stuck, write a few articles of your own and then go to sites like www.articlecity.com and sprinkle a few of their articles around your site to beef it up.

6) Be sure to read their program policy and procedures carefully and make sure your site hasn't violated any of the terms.

How to Join AdSense

In late 2008, Google tightened up their acceptance policies. According to an email I received from someone who was trying to join the program, you now must meet the following criteria before you are accepted...

- Your website must be your own top-level domain (www.domain.com and not domain.com/mysite). That means you can't just sign up with a free blogger or free web hosting account and get approved for AdSense.

- Your domain name must have been registered and active for at least 6 months before you apply

- The registration information that you provide during the AdSense registration must match your domain name registration information

- Your website must contain a substantial amount of original content

Once you meet the above criteria, go to http://adsense.google.com to apply.

When you are accepted, simply copy and paste the provided HTML code into any page that you'd like to show the ads. If you've done a good job of defining the content on your web pages, the ads that show should be relevant to the content of your page...increasing the chances of click-thrus by your visitors.

You can either display the ads vertically along side the page like Google does or in a banner-like formation horizontally across your pages. The placement is up to you. You can even customize the colors to match your site's theme.

How Google AdSense Affects the Internet Environment

Among several innovative services offered by the internet giant, Google, an efficient advertising system called AdSense was introduced in 2003. Like several other services, Google did buy the basic idea of this new advertising system from a small company. According to the direct financial profits for all parties involved in the advertising system, the so-called AdSense was rapidly spread across the internet.

In fact, no other idea has affected the entire internet as AdSense did. In addition to the direct influence of AdSense, the brilliant idea caused the formation of numerous similar companies devoted to online advertising systems.

Among possible methods of online advertising, AdSense mainly utilizes CPC, which stands for Cost Per Click. This is indeed the brilliant idea of AdSense, and the main reason for its popularity, as even small websites can easily earn revenue.

Pros of Google AdSense

Google AdSense has many virtues, of which the following are the most prevalent.

Advertisement: Google AdSense provided an easy and effective framework for online advertising, and the internet really needed this advancement. By the development of internet, the demand for online advertising was extremely increased.

Selling the ad spaces through direct contracts or advertising companies was only applicable for famous websites (with a constant source of traffic); whereas, many websites had random visitors from search engines or even low-traffic websites with potential visitors (according to their specialized contents). This situation indeed hindered the real potential of cyberspace for online advertising.

Revenue: The success of online advertising system of AdSense results in a strong flow of money through internet. In other words, rather than finding relevant webpages, the users need to find most reliable and useful sources.

Publishers Advertisement: Since Google AdSense works with websites rather than companies, one can advertize any link. Thus, many publishers also advertise on the AdSense. For instance, one sees a desirable product with a reasonable price on the Ads by Google, but instead of redirecting to the seller page, the link leads to a third party page showing a referral link to buy that product. This tunnel is frustrating, and many people get lost in this complicated way.

A success story from India

When the Internet first boomed in India, many people proceeded with caution -- adoption was fairly slow compared to the U.S. But a few adventurous spirits jumped right in and have stuck with it for the long haul. Among them is Babychen Mathew, who left a career in journalism to start his own website, dancewithshadows.com. This site offers readers the latest headline news and feature stories on various topics. Babychen started this site as a hobby, and perhaps as an extension of his profession. Very soon after launching, he discovered Google and the AdSense program through various web development forums on the Internet. And the rest is history, he says.

“After exploring every bit of this Google product, with a few trial and errors along the way, I’ve discovered on my own the best ad formats and colors that suit my webpages,” he reports. Having tried almost every AdSense format and feature as they were offered, he settled for a vertical wide skyscraper (160X600) on the left sidebar and a horizontal link unit (728X15) along the top of his pages.

“Now, with the help of AdSense Support, I am currently using a medium rectangle (300X250) ad format too, and have integrated it into my content in some sections to capitalize on potential video ads,” Babychen continues. “I’ve tried other online ad distribution networks, and formats like flash ads and banner ads, but I was not very satisfied. While some were experiments, others didn’t cater to the Indian market, and a few others were plain irritating."

Today, Babychen is a happy publisher, with most of his revenue coming from Google AdSense. And he says he loves to recommend AdSense to all who will listen!

AMBIENT OCCLUSION IN MAYA8

Start up maya. Import the model you want to render with AO (ambient occlusion) if you want you can create a little stand for him to stand on like did. But if you're not going to import your model, create two spheres close to each other, almost touching also you can create a plane for the ground if you'd like

Now go to your hypershade editor

Once you've got it up, make sure you're in mental ray nodes (Create Mental Ray Nodes should appear on the side, if you see create Maya Nodes, click the little black arrow and click Create Mental Ray Nodes up at the top of the hypershade editor) Click materials, and click mib_illum_lambert (if your attribute editor is not open on the side hit CTRL+A to get it up) and change it's settings to look like this:

Now go back to your hypershade editor and scroll down to Textures, click mib_amb_occlusion you should see it in the lower half of your hypershade editor as a white cube, in your attribute editor you should now see your ambient occlusion settings apply these settings to it:

Click on the cube with your middle mouse button (if you don't have a scroll where I don't know what other button works >_<) and drag it on top of your mib_illum_lambert you should then see a little menu pop out with a few selections, choose ambient. Now what I did was I changed the background color of my perspective camera to a light gray for those of you who have darker monitors it would be easier to see (I would hope) so to do that go to the menu on your perspective view port and click view>Camera Attribute Editor... and the cameras settings should pop up in the atribute editor, scroll down to environment and make it a light gray.

Now that we have our lambert and ambient occlusion shaders attached, we should assign them to our model! Select your model and/or plane/stand if you made one, make sure you're in the rendering toolset, and go to lighting/shading>assign existing material>mib_illum_lambert. Ok Now what we need to do is go the render globals and select mental ray from the "render using:" menu at the top. Go to the mental ray tab and change quallity presets to production, and click render

Maya 8.0 problems

I have noticed there are some slight problems with this tutorial in 8.0, (if you're capable of translating the paths to the tools and what not into 8.0) continue to do everything like the tutorials said, except add a pointlight with shadows turned off and an intensity of .2 to .4 depending on how bright you want it

And go into the render globals, when you choose production, the multi-pixel filtering gets changed to gauss, this attribute is under Anti-Aliasing quality. This should resolve some of the problems, and be sure to move the light!

Just finished creating some videos showing the creation of Pixie Dust Effect (as seen in the movie Tinkerbell). Samsung P2350 23" Full HD Monitor

The accessories included were only a VGA Cable, Power Cable, Manual and the Driver discs.

The monitor controls are done not by ordinary buttons, but feather touch buttons. The button LEDs light up on the slightest touch. The LEDs also switch off automatically after a few seconds. Brightness of the LED can be adjusted too. They need a little getting used to, coz finding the right point can be tricky at the start. The exterior panel is glossy with ToC(Touch of Color) finish as can be seen in the images.

Here is how the monitor looks in real with HD Wallpapers. It is great to say the least, especially at the given price point. Color reproduction is pretty accurate and the viewing angles are not too bad either. The vertical viewing angles aren't all that great just like the other monitors in the same price range. HD content is a treat to watch. Plain text is also very crisp and causes no strain on the eye.

If you're on a tight budget and cannot afford an IPS panel monitor, you're next best bet would be the Samsung Lavender series monitor. The total price I paid for it was Rs. 11,900 inclusive of tax in Bangalore.

PROS:
1) Very high Dynamic Contrast.
2) Fast 2ms response time is great for gaming and fast moving images to avoid ghosting.
3) Can differentiate between all degrees of blacks. Not so with the degrees of white. Have to turn down contrast and it gets better!
4) More features compared to any other monitor at the same price range.
5) Amber color blended into Samsung’s piano black bezel frame gives it a classy look. (Just like their HDTVs )

CONS:
1) Slight backlight bleed on the top and bottom edges.
2) Magic Color has a variable result, making certain videos look good and the other not so good
3) No DVI Cable Included.
4) Lacking HDMI Input.

I would certainly recommend anyone to buy this monitor as it adds class n quality to your desktop without much compromise in performance! As far as the After Sales Service is concerned, Samsung is great without doubt. From what I could comprehend after reviewing all the monitors, the Samsung Lavender Series would beat the 2233SW, Dell 2209W and the BenQ variants with ease.

Latest Team News : Defensive injury concerns ease

United’s defensive injury problems have subsided slightly ahead of Sunday’s season opener at Old Trafford against Birmingham.

Nemanja Vidic started training with the first team again on Friday after overcoming a calf problem, while Jonny Evans is likely to miss Sunday’s match against Birmingham with an ankle injury, but should return for the trip to Burnley on Wednesday.

United are also without Edwin van der Sar (hand) and Rafael (recovering from a shoulder operation), but Wes Brown is likely to partner Rio Ferdinand in the centre of defence, Ben Foster has recovered from a swollen knee which kept him out of England’s game against Holland as a precaution in midweek, while Gary Neville is over his groin problem and may make the bench.

“Jonny Evans picked up an injury against Chelsea, which resurfaced during training for Ireland,” Sir Alex confirmed on Friday afternoon. “He’s doubtful for Sunday, but it’s not serious and he should be ready for Wednesday against Burnley.

“Rio returned from international duty with a sore back, but we think he’ll be OK. Wes and Gary both trained with the first team this week. Wes is more advanced than Gary and he is in contention for Sunday. We might put Gary on the bench.”

Nani’s shoulder “popped out of place” after falling awkwardly following a challenge from John Terry during the Community Shield last weekend, but he made a substitute appearance for Portugal in midweek and he will hope to repeat his dazzling Wembley performance.

Here we go people... Its Back, its bigger & its the best hands down.. The EPL is back & i am ready for yet another roller coatser ride.. With a summer transfer of Ronaldo & Tevez behind us United are looking ahead & gunning for their 4th Consecutive premier league title & a record breaking 19th Title. United have had an eventfull summer transfer by bringing in the likes of Micheal Owen , Oberton , Antonio Valencia. Another season where nothing will please us fans more then winning & going ahead of liverpool to that magical number 19. It wont be easy as Liverpool, Chelsea & Arsenal are all going to be big threats throughout the season.

First up Utd welcome newly promoted Birmingham City to the Theater of Dreams & i expect a Utd win plain & simple. Although the last 2 years Utd have struggled & have only drawn their games.

There are quite a few injuries already, which isn't nice to see. Nani, Obertan, Neville, Van Der Sar, Foster, Vidic, Brown, and Rafael are all out due to injuries, not to mention Owen Hargreaves, who will not be back 'til January, at the very least.
